With small mills with electromechanical screwdown, a modification to servohydraulic screwdown is often not necessary or is too expensive.

The mill operator must observe the actual strip thickness values on the exit side of the mill and reposition the mill screwdown manually as deviation limits are exceeded until the actual strip thickness value is back within the required tolerance limits.

The operator´s attention is permanently demanded and under strain. The simple Vollmer controller (VPI) serves this purpose well, relieving the operator and performing consistently. The VPI reads the actual strip thickness values of the thickness gauge on the exit side of the mill continuously and repositions the mill screwdown if a control limit is approached.
